Cross inhibition improves activity selection when switching incurs time costs

2015

Abstract We consider a behavioural model of an animal choosing between two activities, based on positive feedback, and examine the effect of introducing cross inhibition between the motivations for the two activities. While cross-inhibition has previously been included in models of decision making, the question of what benefit it may provide to an animal’s activity selection behaviour has not previously been studied. In neuroscience and in collective behaviour cross-inhibition, and other equivalent means of coupling evidence-accumulating pathways, have been shown to approximate statistically-optimal decision-making and to adaptively break deadlock, thereby improving decision performance. Influence of computer feedback on attentional biases to emotional faces in children

2016

We examined which type of corrective feedback in a computerized task produces an optimal balance between performance and emotional reactions in children. To that end, we conducted an emotional dot-probe task. We employed three types of corrective feedback (negative, positive, or mixed) along with a control, non-feedback condition. We tested the effect of feedback on: (i) task performance; (ii) immediate emotional reactions in terms of attentional preferences toward emotional faces (happy, sad, and angry); and (iii) self-reported affective experience after the task. Results showed that children committed more errors in the non-feedback group than in the mixed and negative feedback groups. Fu…

The cumulative effect of positive and negative feedback on emotional experience.

2021

The cumulative effect of positive or negative feedback on subsequent emotional experiences remains unclear. Elucidating this effect could help individuals to better understand and accept the change in emotional experience, irrespective of when they or others receive consecutive positive or negative feedback. This study aimed to examine this effect on 37 participants using self-reported pleasantness and event-related potential data as indicators. After completing each trial, the participants received predetermined false feedback; they were then assessed on a nine-point pleasantness scale. There were 12 false feedback conditions categorized into three valence types. The positive type consiste…

Brain Biophysics: Perception, Consciousness, Creativity. Brain Computer Interface (BCI)

2018

The paper presents connections between perception, awareness, and creativity from the biophysical point of view. Attention was drawn to human senses’ limitations and their influence on cognition. The role of interfaces connecting brain with computer and particular role of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) are indicated which the authors believe will be the next stage of human brain supporting technology evolution. It will enable the growth of perception, awareness, and creativity, and consequently lead to social development.

Aggregation and sedimentation of active Brownian particles at constant affinity.

2019

We study the motility-induced phase separation of active particles driven through the interconversion of two chemical species controlled by ideal reservoirs (chemiostats). As a consequence, the propulsion speed is non-constant and depends on the actual inter-particle forces, enhancing the positive feedback between increased density and reduced motility that is responsible for the observed inhomogeneous density. For hard discs, we find that this effect is negligible and that the phase separation is controlled by the average propulsion speed. For soft particles and large propulsion speeds, however, we predict an observable impact on the collective behavior. We briefly comment on the reentrant…

Good job! - giving positive feedback in EFL lessons : comparison of primary and secondary school

2013

Lisäksi tarkoituksena on selvittää, mistä asioista oppilaat saavat palautetta. Kiinnostuksen kohteena ovat myös palautteenantotavat sekä positiivisen palautteen määrä. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan laadullinen. Tutkimukseen osallistui yksi englanninopettaja ja neljä hänen oppilastaan alakoulusta sekä yksi englanninopettaja ja …
